Parents need to know
Families can talk about finding appropriate information online for kids. How can you tell that a site is reliable? What are some signs that a site is OK for kids? Also, families can discuss time limits for computer use. Even though a site is educational, why is it a good idea to have some time away from the screen? How long is too long to play online?

Social Behavior:
The boards are mostly about books and although there doesn't seem to be a filter, users stay nice and on topic.
Consumerism:
There are a few banner ads, subscription call outs, and contests and giveaways. The kids section promotes Scholastic's books. A large section at the bottom of the home page advertises Scholastic products and services. There's a huge store for teachers, parents, and kids.
Drugs/Alcohol/Tobacco:
Educational Value:
Scholastic is all about education from teaching resources to student activities broken down into age groups. Even the games are educational. The site also promotes the joy of reading.
Violence
The news section covers the news -- even if that means wars, fighting, and natural disasters, but it's all in a very fact-driven, safe way.
