The good stuff

  • Educational value:

    Lots of good info on marine life, biology, the ocean. The virtual aquarium section encourages kids to keep their virtual fish tank decorated and clear of algae.
 

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

    Pre-determined chat messages create safe chat for young kids. That said, even if kids can type freely, they can be ignored by other members.

  • Violence:

    Not an issue.

  • Sex:

    Not an issue.

  • Language:

    Not an issue.

  • Consumerism:

    You must buy a Seapal plush toy (they start at $11) to gain access to the site. Also, site says, "the more Seapals you own, the bigger your SeaPad gets!" Players earn Pearl Points to buy stuff to decorate their animal's Seapad.

  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

About SeapalsWorld

Parents need to know that this virtual world is a fun, educational site that focuses on marine life. A la Webkinz.com, buy a sea turtle, dolphin, reef shark, or other stuffed toy and get a code to enter to play with the virtual version of your animal. The site provides kids with their animal's own virtual aquarium and "tubestation" leading to games, chats, and a store (players earn Pearl Points to buy stuff to decorate their animal's Seapad). Seapalsworld.com says it's appropriate for ages 5-12 but younger kids who don't read well may get quickly frustrated by the games and the skills needed to navigate the site.
