Parents need to know that this "action sports" video site from Tony Hawk and the FunnyorDie.com folks includes a "don't try this at home" disclaimer, but glorifies athletes (and amateurs) who attempt potentially dangerous tricks. The videos also have some gory imagery. Users can sign up to post comments (most are kept clean, but there is some swearing), upload videos, and create a profile (which can include personal information like birthdate, location, a photo, and links).
From the creators of FunnyorDie.com comes SHREDORDIE.COM, a collaboration with skater Tony Hawk and his production company, THI/900 films. Fans of skating, snowboarding, surfing, BMX, and motocross will find hundreds of videos of tricks, tips, and bails (cringe-worthy crashes and wipeouts). The video player lets users enable slow-mo or frame-by-frame action, a fun feature for "how'd they do THAT?" flips and spins.
If seeing an athlete squeeze blood clots out of his elbow isn't enough of a gross-out, the unsavory Bam Margera also pops up in an interview with Hawk on "Dissent TV." Users can rate videos as "shred" or "die" and can register to create a profile, upload videos, comment, and post in forums (are mostly clean and stick to subjects being discussed).
Families can talk about posting stuff online. What is OK to have in a video or profile page? What personal information shouldn't be shared with others? Families can also talk about taking risks. When is risk-taking a good idea, and when should you play it safe? Do the site's videos of people getting hurt make you more aware of the risks of extreme sports, or are they just "entertainment"?
