Video site for boarders has some gnarly falls.

Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 12–14

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

If you want to become an expert on the snowboarding scene, here's your video library.
  • Messages:

    Not an issue.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

Some of the video clips show bodily harm and nasty falls.
  • Sex:

    Not an issue.
  • Language:

Occasional off-color comment such as a "damn" or "s--t" heard during an interview or video of a trick, but nothing intense or objectionable. The boards mostly stay on-topic and clean -- a random "s--t" here or there.
  • Consumerism:

Commercial intros before some videos -- mainly brief promos for snowboarding equipment; there's also a sponsorship section of the site which allows users to try to gain sponsorship.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Occasional reference to drinking in interviews; cigarettes shown in some videos.

What Parents Need to Know

About SnowVision

Parents need to know that this snowboarding video sharing site shows off some pretty extreme moves, and many of the tricks could be dangerous if tried by unseasoned boarders. There are forums, but they aren't heavily trafficked, mostly stay on-topic, and are 99 percent clean. A few swear words and a couple of references to drinking pop up in the interviews. Members can post external links to other sites and their personal MySpace page.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about how advertising plays a role in independent sports like snowboarding. Why do snowboarders need sponsors and how are products marketed to this community? Even though the ads aren't flashing on every page, did you notice them?
