Giant ad for malls disguised as voting site.

Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 13–16

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

Visitors can register to vote. Information about elections is broken down into digestible sections. Provides some good information about the presidential candidates and where they stand on several issues, but the information takes a back seat to the commercial aspects of the site.

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

    Encourages political participation...and shopping.
  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

    Not an issue.
  • Language:

There's a chat room with no language filter, and the terms of service doesn't address chat protocol (e.g. no harassment or hate speech).
  • Consumerism:

The site belongs to a company that owns malls. Visitors are repeatedly encouraged to go to the mall and patronize sponsors. A sweepstakes collects personal information that can be used for marketing. There are prominent banner ads that have the same design as the site's content.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About UrVotesCount

Parents need to know that this site -- which is ostensibly about giving teens a voice in politics -- was created by a company that owns a chain of malls. Teens can cast their vote for a political candidate online or at one of those malls. This enters them into a sweepstakes and collects their name, date of birth, address, email, and phone number. They can also opt-in to receive a monthly email from the company that gives them information about store discounts; teens have to provide additional personal details (like household income), and the information may be shared with third parties. Sponsors are mentioned repeatedly throughout the site, often where users would expect to see content. Buried underneath the promotions is some helpful information about candidates. The site's spokesperson is Wizards of Waverly Place star Selena Gomez.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about what information is OK to share and what's not. If the purpose of this site is to give teens a voice in the election -- as the press kit states -- why is so much of the content focused on shopping and collecting demographic information? Families can also talk about which political issues teens are most concerned about and why it's important to keep up with current events.
