What’s the Story?
Word Central is based on the metaphor of a school -- you'll find classrooms, a science lab, and even a cafeteria. The lunchroom serves up a daily buzzword, complete with a side order of definitions and an audio garnish so you can hear the word of the day. Speaking of sound, what's the odd noise coming from the music room? It's not music, but something verse: poetry. Compose your own wacky poem using the "mad-lib" technique as you select a verb here, a noun there, and a gerund over there. On the second floor, you can make up words to help build a silly dictionary. And don't miss the "science" lab. Type in a sentence and click to perform various experiments on it. You might choose to remove all the vowels, or see it in Morse code.
Is It Any Good?
What's disappointing about this site is that there is not much more to do, and the site hasn't changed in years. Merriam-Webster should renovate Word Central, repaint, and get some new furniture.
