What’s the Story?

For those who pursue dreams of creating instant Internet pop culture, YTMND.com is a must-see destination. The idea is simple. Users are invited to use the free YTMND tool to take a photo or graphic, give it a caption, "tile" it many times on the screen, and slap a soundtrack on it. Usually the sound is more of an endlessly repeating short catchphrase or song fragment that has something to do with the picture chosen. Some of the submissions become instant Internet "hits," passed around via email and linked to by other Web sites.

Is It Any Good?

3
The problem with the site is obvious. Users create and submit all sorts of things, from Scientology exposés to bestiality. For example, one features a Photoshopped image of Harry Potter drinking a beer alongside Hermione and Ron (who are smoking weed) while "How Could This Happen to Me?" plays ("How could this happen to me/I've made my mistakes/Got nowhere to run"/etc.) The same tune is used for "Bambi's Suicide," a photo of a dead deer mangled on the highway. Another shows apparent news footage of a man in a spinning, burning wheelchair (as Dead or Alive cheerily sings, "You spin me right round, baby, right round...").

To be fair, you have to put in your 18-and-over birthdate to see the "NSFW" (Not Safe for Work) sites, but that's all that stands between your young kids and a cartoon of Aladdin and Princess Jasmine in which the Genie makes an obscene suggestion over and over and ... well, you get the idea.
