Parents need to know

Parents need to know that this site for tweens and young teens provides an introduction to social networking and content sharing. To join, users have to ask their parents to submit a credit card to verify their identity and consent. Profiles and other user-generated content can be viewed only by registered members, and moderators review videos and photos before they're posted. And, only a member's "buddies" can comment on his or her profile and content. Unlike other social networking sites, parents won't find any sexed-up photos or come-ons, and there's no language stronger than "that sucks."

Families can talk about Internet safety. What are some of the dangers associated with using the Web? Have you or anyone you know ever been bullied or otherwise mistreated online? How? And make sure tweens understand your rules for using the Internet, especially regarding uploading videos and providing personal information.

What's the story?

Reviewed by Susan Yudt

If MySpace is a rebellious teenager, YOMOD.COM is its wholesome younger sib. Members (mostly in the 8-14 age range) can create profiles, write blogs, upload photos and videos, and post comments on their friends' pages.

Is it any good?

3
Publicly launched in September, the site currently has less than 100 members, but you'd actually want your kid to be friends with them IRL (in real life). Kids can get creative with their profiles, uploading background images and formatting text in different ways. Videos range from quirky-cool (an animated take on the American Revolution, firemen lifting a car with streams of water from their hoses) to don't-try-these-at-home pratfalls (a pogo-stick backflip? BAD idea!).

Nuts and bolts

  • Playability: Easy
  • Reading Required: Medium
  • Graphics: Videos, photos, animations

Good Site for my Grandkids

My grandkids showed me their profiles and at first I was sceptical...but it looks like a safe site that the kids have fun with.

This site is terrible.

This website, Yomod.com, asks for credit card information, e-mail address, names, and very personal stuff. I didn't actually register when it asked for me to give credit card information. Stick to AOL chatrooms, kids.
