Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 16–17

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

You can have fun with all the information other people give. It's interesting to try a search smackdown to see what's more popular -- say, Usher's CDs vs. Beyonce's.

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

The role models (as described on their own pages) range from the founder of the site, who's happy that his house is "near the bars," to a young man in Nigeria who says, "I own Jesus and God, this is all I have."
  • Violence:

Some member photos depict users pointing guns at the camera.
  • Sex:

Since much of the material is member-provided, you'll see sexually suggestive usernames, as well as items that are owned or wanted.
  • Language:

Many of the user comments and profiles include vulgar language.
  • Consumerism:

See something you want? Buy it now!
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

In the blogs, members say they got drunk, smoked weed, etc.

What Parents Need to Know

This review of Zebo was written by Jean Armour Polly

Parents need to know that this site worships consumerism. The privacy policy is a must-read before signing up for membership. Kids can sign up without parental consent. Members can send mail to one another and buy each other gifts from wish lists -- a typical way that pedophiles "groom" unsuspecting young victims.

  • Families can talk about Internet safety. How do you know you can trust someone you meet online? You can also have conversations about materialism. Why do some people think it's important to have a lot of stuff?

More on Zebo

What’s the Story?

ZEBO's home page skips a welcome and says, "Hi, what do you own?" Users begin by listing all their possessions, sometimes adding notes on how much the item cost and where others can buy it. They also list what they'd like to own next, then go on to describe their shopping style (impulse? thrift shops?) and their celebrity style look-alikes (Johnny Depp? The Osbournes?) Apparently, you're no longer what you eat (so '70s!), but rather what you own -- or want to own. Accounts are free, but users need to supply their name, gender, email address, and birth date. Keep in mind that you'll be telling the site about the items you already own and what items you'd like to get.

Is It Any Good?

The site's privacy policy is unusual, and you might find that it isn't as protective as you'd like. Read it carefully before deciding to become a member. Kids younger than 18 are allowed to register, but they're asked to have their parents monitor their use. Most members' pages seem like they're looking for a date rather than a shopping bargain. And most don't bother to add details and prices on what they own and what they want to buy. They do add provocative items to their lists, though, such as adult sex toys, condoms, and drugs.

You can also shop here, but it's important to know that the site isn't a retailer, but rather a venue where retailers can sell their goods. What sorts of things can you buy? Electronics, jewelry, birdhouses. ... The odd thing is that, unlike Amazon.com, you can't sort items by "highest rated," price, or anything else useful, so you may end up browsing through hundreds of listings. Bottom line: If you're looking for opinions on products, there are many better places to find them. Same goes for social networking. This is a site that should be put back on the shelf.

This is like MySpace with a online retail combined! Although not worth joining, it is worth looking at.
