Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 13–18

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

The site encourages an interest in politics, but the humor is geared toward adults.
  • Messages:

    Not an issue.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

Many of the videos feature suggestive humor (the size of John McCain's testicles or grinding on strangers for comedic effect, for example) and/or women in revealing outfits.
  • Language:

Videos contain words like "ass," and although the chat function has a filter to block out foul language, users can swear in comments posted about the site's videos.
  • Consumerism:

The site has ads for GoDaddy.com and other sites owned by Next New Networks, which publishes BarelyPolitical.com. The site's online store also sells politically themed T-shirts.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Very few references are on the site, but the online store does offer a T-shirt that says "subject to beer pressure."

What Parents Need to Know

About BarelyPolitical

Parents need to know that the site's zany videos have a political bent (most make fun of politicians or politics) and are funny, but they aren't for younger kids. Some are sexually suggestive and some have current event references that will go over the heads of many young teens. The terms of use says the site has "no obligation to monitor the use of the site," and, accordingly, its content varies in what's appropriate. A filter screens out swear words in the chat (although plenty get through from users adding a letter or using creative spelling), but there's no filter for posting comments about the site's videos. And, it's easy to access any of the site's content; no need to register to for live chat or to see any video, but you have to provide your name and email to post comments.
