Why We Rated This on for Ages 8 and Up

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

Several of the games make players think of strategy rather than just points. Action Pack, for example, is a strategic card game that's heavy on the numbers. Players need to use addition and multiplication skills, as well as think about probability.
  • Messages:

The cartoon series Ben 10: Alien Force centers around the title character, Ben and his fight to save humankind form a race of space aliens. The Web site gives information and background on the characters of the show, explaining how they have matured from the previous series, Ben 10, and how they've taken on new responsibilities and skills.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

Since the premise of the show is a universe-wide battle between aliens and humans, there is some level of violence in the cartoon and on the Web site. On the character descriptions for instance, you can learn about various aliens and their fighting abilities. These include neuroshock blasts and fire shooting, but also super intelligence and speed. The "good guys" often use detector power to ward off attacks rather than shooting back. Guns emit lightning and lasers rather than bullets.
  • Sex:

Only mild references to crushes, dates, and a possible kiss.
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

Cartoon Network shows and products are heavily promoted. Ads for products and food are targeted at kids and provide links to advertisers' Web sites. Go-Gurt has an ad that encourages visitors to click and visit their site to enter a sweepstakes for a free camcorder. There are also links to mobile games that will appeal to kids, like the Scooby Doo Mystery mobile game that can be downloaded by visiting an advertisers' site.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About Ben10

Parents need to know that this is the Web site for the animated cartoon series Ben 10: Alien Force, and revolves around action and attacks between humans and aliens. Although there are guns and battles, there's no blood or gore, and characters are often shown using their smarts and physical skills, rather than weapons, to save planet Earth. The site has a message board where anyone can post without registering; but the board seems to be monitored pretty well.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about the site's game-design module. What do you think are some of the elements that you would add to your own video game? Do you like action or strategy? By making your own video game, do you think you would have a better understanding of what video game designers need to do to make an entertaining game?
