Parents need to know that this worthwhile initiative teaches kids how to reduce their carbon footprint.
Launched June 1, 2009, Friends for Change: Project Green asks kids to help the environment in four key areas -- climate, water, waste, and habitats -- over the course of one year. Urged on by video plugs from teen Disney stars like Miley Cyrus, kids who complete specific projects such as switching to energy-saving lightbulbs get to vote on how Disney will divvy up $1 million in donations to environmental causes.
Disney's engaging online tools should make kids want to do their share to protect the planet. It's fun to check off action items and collect colorful environment trophies in the virtual backpack. The upcoming online reports about how Project Green members are making a difference should give kids a real-world sense of accomplishment, too.
Families can talk about why it’s important to develop good green habits early in life and decide which of the Friends for Change pledges are practical to carry out. For instance, not all kids will be able to bike to school, but most families should be able to commit to washing full loads of laundry.
