common sense media says

Easy-to-follow program offers everyday ways to go green.

parents & educators say

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this worthwhile initiative teaches kids how to reduce their carbon footprint.

Educational value: Each pledge comes with an informative backgrounder crammed with fun facts and statistics. For instance, kids who promise to unplug electronics when not in use learn that items left plugged in account for a surprising 40 percent of power used.
Positive messages: Disney sets a nice tone of environmental responsibility. Project Green kids who venture out onto the rest of the site will find the Disney.com chat rooms to be safe, friendly places to connect with others.
Violence: Not applicable.
Sex: Not applicable.
Language: A profanity filter combs words in Disney’s chat rooms (even the innocent “heck” gets red tagged). For optimum protection, parents can set the chat level to G-rated canned phrases such as, "How are you?"
Consumerism: The Friends for Change page is ad-free but the rest of Disney.com is not. Banner, pop-up, and video ads for games, movies, music, and even supermarket products like toilet paper will bombard those who venture off the green page.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Not applicable.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids

Families can talk about why it’s important to develop good green habits early in life and decide which of the Friends for Change pledges are practical to carry out. For instance, not all kids will be able to bike to school, but most families should be able to commit to washing full loads of laundry.

Is it any good?

Disney's engaging online tools should make kids want to do their share to protect the planet. It's fun to check off action items and collect colorful environment trophies in the virtual backpack. The upcoming online reports about how Project Green members are making a difference should give kids a real-world sense of accomplishment, too.
