It's hard to find appropriate reading material or websites for my son. He's 5 and can easily read chapter books like the Littles, but most of them feature main characters who are several grades above him. He loves this site!! I only gave it 4 stars because I find it a bit too didactic at times, but he'd probably give it 6.
The best thing about it is that it has a fuller idea of social behavior and responsibilities than most. "Behaving" isn't only about taking care of yourself, with borders at your own body, it's also about taking care of the world we live in.
The site is divided into 2 parts: Eekohouse and Eekoworld. Both have games and video segments. I get a bit tired of hearing them repeated, but am glad my kid now wants to turn off lights, is interested in creatures at the beach, and finds his long-time interest in recycling reconfirmed.
Anyone who dares to speak against a view connected to Earth Day is faced with criticism, but so be it.
I viewed The Tundra section, off of The Environment link, and found the information presented at first even-handed. On the topic of oil drilling, the characters discussed both sides of the issue, but in the end came down decidedly on an anti-drilling stance.
Certainly, the fuel-saving ideas presented as a reason not to drill can save oil consumption, but clearly this is an attempt to sway the debate in the minds of children.
