What parents need to know
Parents need to know that although kids younger than 4 can probably use this site with some simple pointing and clicking, we don't recommend having kids online who are that young. This Cartoon Network show's Web spinoff provides age-appropriate, educational games for preschool and kindergarten kids who love the imaginative Ellen. Some of the games' instructions are verbal, so reading skills aren't necessary. (Note: The video can't be viewed by Mac and PC-based Firefox users. Also, if you have your browser's "Block Pop-ups" feature turned on, you'll need to turn it off or much of the site won't work.)
What's it about?
ELLENSACRES.COM centers on Ellen, the 5-year-old Cartoon Network character who lives in a rural Nevada hotel with her parents and uses her imagination to enliven her days. The site includes six main sections: Games, Free Stuff (printable coloring sheets and wallpaper), Gallery (a showcase of the show's characters and creatures in different poses), Characters (with bios), For Parents (information about the show), and Episodes (written synopses plus a link to the Cartoon Network's site to watch the full episodes).
Is it any good?
This nearly advertising-free site (other than the obvious Cartoon Network references and the episode) is a fun extension of the Ellen's Acres show. Ellen is all about imagination and learning through basic play. That said, many kids above age 6 will likely find the games too easy and the site itself rather limited. But for the preschool and kindergarten set, EllensAcres.com offers enough choices to keep them learning and imagining with Ellen for at least a few return visits.
What families can talk about
Families can talk about what Ellen is imagining. If you imagine you're in ancient Egypt like Ellen, what would you do as the princess? Why does Ellen need a suit like that when she's pretending she's an astronaut in outer space?
