One of my favorite websites~
First off, this site was really not intended for kids under the age of thirteen, although I know several kids a few years younger than that get on. (including my 11-year old sister and SEVERAL of her classmates) It does have some iffy content for children under the age of 13, but parents should be monitoring what their young kids are doing on the internet anyways. Gaia has a lot to do when you're logged on, like forums, arenas, decorating your avatar, games like pinball, and a new fighting game called Zomg. Adult content wise, the forums are the main problem. They do contain several threads with sexual content and language (bleeped out), but most are made by teens. You can set it so only certain people can send you PMs, friend requests, and comment on your profile. You can also easily block annoying or rude people and report inappropriate threads and such, so safety really isn't an issue. Gaia also has many nice users as well. Recently Gaia has had a problem with the consumerism. Certain items can be bought with real money, and there is some real life merchandise that can be bought off the site. No one forces you to spend money though, and gaia does need a way to pay to keep the site up. Recently it set up a way to get free Gaia cash by completing offers from gaia's sponsers. I suggest you just stay away from those, they're rather dangerous. So as long as you're careful this is a wonderful site for teens 13+. My username is demon twi on gaia. ^_^

best for teens and older children stay off
ive been on it for years and it seems mostly the talk about sexual content and drugs come from the younger children on there trying to act cool if you dont like your kids being on there keep them off cause gaia already tried to disable the ciggarettes but everyone was against it so they brought them i hate how everyone worries about gaia if some talks sexual block them and leave or just wait for them to leave cause usalley its just trolls and dont go into the mature forums you know adults like to post stuff too so i say make it 15 and up and keep your freaking children off the site if your gonna have a hissy fit

Best for Ages 10 and Up
I love it personally. Yes, it can get pretty inappropriate at times, but that's only some of the threads. If you don't want your kids to see this make sure they don't wander into the General Discussion or Life Discussion forums. They talk about things they might not understand. While the website has its downs in this are there are ups like educational threads that let us talk about sports or the exchange where you learn to handle money and item.

Gaia is one solid website ;D
I've been on Gaia since I was 12 (Shhh, don't tell the Mods, that's AGAINST THE RULES TO BE ON UNDER 13) My main 'concern' is Gaia Cash (real money) has been growing in use on the site, but whatever, it's not p2p (pay to play). Gaia is a great site, overall. It's forums can be either very educational or very vulgar depending on where you go. The mods are only volunteers who work as hard as they can, but thing's slip by SOMETIMES. You won't get hacked unless you give out your password, and since it's plastered all over the site "DON'T GIVE OUT YOUR PASSWORDS TO ANYONE!" it's totally your own fault if you do get hacked. BY law, you can't be on there if you are 12 or under, and PG-13 in California, means you can swear as long as you aren't swearing AT someone or using it in sexual context. Sexual content is allowed as long as it isn't over-the-top or full-on nudity. Not only is Gaia a great forum-based site, but it also has many other fun features like Puzzles, or it's MMORPG, zOMG. Gaia is always improving it's features and creating more spiffy items for our avatars. In conclusion, Gaia isn't appropriate (nor should it be) for people under 13, but for people over 13 it is a fun website that is always improving!

gaia's great if you trust your kid.
It's not a perfect site, i admit. But the reason i give it a 6+ is that with the filter on the kids can't read the swearwords, and what six year old is gonna click on a topic with something inapropriate? some of the topics on the forums make me uncomfortable, but those are the topics you just...ignore!!! or better yet, teach you child to be vocal about things that make them uncomfortable. if you ask someone to stop swearing, chances are they'll stop. plus, once you get to middle school you hear swearwords *constantly*, so kids shouls get used to it.

Not as bad as people make it out to be
I don't think the adults in this thread realize what's going on. I'm 13, I have an account, I've been registered for quite a time. We kids love sites like this because it lets us interact with other kids and adults that don't know us, just so that we can be our real selves. Nobody judges us as much, even if there are occasionally trolls, spammers, flamers, and those things. Sure, there are inappropriate people, but they get reported and banned and we know that the moderators are trying to do their best to make the site 13+. We DO need our own privacy and space. It's just weird for a parent to be watching every move we make on a computer. And if you are a parent, your child will know what's right and wrong if you've raised them the right way. Things like sex and drugs don't come up often in Gaia and what a child does also depends on sex and drug education. I've had quite enough of these classes, including computer safety. I know exactly what to do and what not to do on Gaia. Gaia itself is a fun filled, interactive site that really helps bring out what a child has in themselves. Getting items using gold gives them a sense of accomplishment. Just because we're kids, doesn't mean our parents should watch us every move and take our falls for us. Age does not equal maturity.

Know where your kids are looking.
While there is inappropriate content on here, openly displayed, most of it is in this little thing called Guilds. Firstly, it is against Gaia rules and ToS to discuss mature content or attempt to use the site as a dating network, and there is an age minimum of thirteen now, I don't know if that was always there. Not that children always follow such rules, but parents can find these types of things out easily. So the site is designed for a slightly older age group, as opposed to sites such as Club Penguin or Littlest Pet Shop (sites my younger siblings play on.) Now, the main forums are moderated by people that Gaia has deemed responsible through their actions. Not to mention, general users can report other users for breaking Gaia Rules and ToS. The reasons most of the inappropriate content is in Guilds is because Guilds are user-moderated. Usually, you can tell what type of content is in a guild just by its main page. The larger guilds are harder to self-moderate- don't expect to find good moderation there. When a guild is reported, then moderators step in, but until the situation is bad enough that this needs to happen, people are going to continue with their actions. Gaia tries to maintain a pleasant but open to opinion environment, but with over a hundred thousand people on each day, that can be difficult. As for my little 'Positive messages' icon I have clicked, that's due to the fact that there ARE good people on there that support things like cancer awareness, and places where you can find a nonjudging voice to listen to a problem. There are many, many opinions in this online community- and people are a good deal less shy about sharing them online. So, as with many sites, there will be ideas you maybe don't want introduced to your child- but that's everywhere, and other than not letting them into the world, there's not a thing you can do about it.

A real fun site, but logical reasoning is key.
Gaiaonline is a wonderful site, it really is, but have to admit, it's got a few iffy users on there. You might wanna steer clear of the Chatterbox forum, since that's where most of the bad stuff gets dumped off. There are tons of different forums through, to match your interests. Spammers and hackers might be a little abundant, but using your logic and keeping your password and info to yourself will prevent that from happening 9 out of 10 times. There are tons of games on Gaia, from puzzles to it's very own MMO. As for the consumerism, it's true, although I really enjoy dressing my avatar up as a out of this world fantasy character.

Gaia is really a good site as long as your kid knows some safety precautions such as filtering swear words and blocking people that just don't seem right. o.o One problem is that some Gaians can be really mean. Today I got some really vicious comments on my profile from a girl. I just deleted the comments and now I'm ignoring her. It's as simple as that.. I never really go to the forums so no comment there. If someone or something someone says is really threatening or uncomfortable, you can report them to site moderators and they will give the person a warning or ban the account. Gaia site moderators try to keep everything below a PG-13 level. Gaia is educational because it teaches you to save for things that you really want. For example, right now I'm saving to buy a dress for my dream avatar. Gaia does not force you to buy anything. Buying stuff for your avatar is an option most people choose. It's fun to express your creativity and personality. I think it's better for kids over 10 because even though Gaia has some really good safety precautions, it can still be kind of an iffy site unless you really trust your kid.

everyone's so stupid when they rate this! READ THE TERMS OF SERVICE BEFORE YOU PLAY idiots. You MUST be over 13 years old. and YOU choose where to go and what to do. Stop blaming the site for your actions, or for what you did. I am personally a member of Gaia, and there's a ton of amazing, funny, and kind people there. You just have to explore. You choose to make it bad. Theres so many things to do on the site! You choose what to do, so don't complain about it.

Good for teens and up
I'm 13, and I have an account there. The sight does reference sexual topics in some threads, and you do talk some about personal things if you want to, but most kids using the site never even wander near those. I use the site to talk to friends, play games, and make a mini me. It's not really easy to get to the threads, and personal topics are generally reserved for people who really need to talk about stuff. "...will stumble upon...in a matter of minutes" Not true. I didn't even see they were there until my 3 week on the site, and I didn't look. Also, by middle school, you've heard all the "strong language" you'll come across. If you want to censor this site for strong language, you might as well just pull your kids out of school as well. Just make sure you talk to your kid a little about internet saftey, and they'll be fine.

Not to be a hypocrite...
I've been on gaia since '06 and I don't think that it's appropriate for kids under 15. Based on the content of the users and that younger kids may not understand when something is a joke or feel pressured into doing something. I'm 16.

the people there are real scortillae
it's a good game i guess. the graphics are nice, you can make a cute avatar, whatever. the problem is mostly with the people. When you aren't being attacked by grammar nazis, chances are you'll meet the most shallow people ever. Or at least the most inept at talking on the internet. The nicest people are the "trolls" and they're shunned by most of the community because they don't take a kid's site as srs bsns.

Good site for everyone 13+
Gaiaonline isn't in any way educational (except if you think the occasional "can you help me with my homework?" threads are math practice or something. But overall it's a fun game where you can talk to people and be yourself. Safety is only a problem if you weren't raised with basic internet safety stuff, don't give out your address, last name, phone number, etc. Sure some threads will seem a little mature (some people post about their teenage pregnancy, first time with drugs, sex) but the truth is most kids are already being exposed to this kind of thing IRL anyway, unless you've totally sheltered your child from the internet and real world.

Ages
Im sixteen. I have been on gaia since I was 10. I would say this website is for teenagers like myself. I've seen sexsual based coverstations and strong langage. This website isn't bad. I've heard everything on the website at school and home. Don't shelter your kids all the time, or the real world is going to scare them.

not for kids, good for tweens and up.
I personally love the website, and go on it almost every day. It's true that there are people out there who make some badly choiced forum topics, but isn't that just like in life and what people actually talk about? Not to mention that the site itself claimes to be pg-13.
