Why We Rated This on for Ages 13 and Up

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

Overall, a lot of inspiring content here for kids who love X Games-type sports. While there are no clear safety warnings for younger visitors, the videos and photos show kids wearing helmets and pads and taking healthy, athletic risks.
  • Messages:

Like most social networking sites, there's some rude and nonsensical content on profiles and in comments, but the overall feeling is positive.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

No overt sexual content, but a few of the profiles feature photos of shirtless boys and some cheeky comments.
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

There's an online store selling the Kids Who Rip DVD series. No other ads.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Not widespread, but at least one profile has a drug reference: "Nemo Couldn't Find You Because You Were Out Getting High."

What Parents Need to Know

About KidsWhoRip

Parents need to know that this is a social networking site for kids who love X Games-style sports -- snowboarding, kiteboarding, skateboarding, surfing, bike racing, and more. There's a bit of questionable content in the member profiles, but overall it's a positive place for kids with a common passion.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about why joining a social networking site based on a common interest may be more useful than one of the giant general social networking sites. Also, talk about why safety rules apply online everywhere your child goes, even if you're talking to someone who shares (or claims to share) similar interests.
