What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this kid-friendly website is a safe, creative place to learn about classical music and its many forms. Created by KUSC, a Southern California classical radio station, this companion to the station’s main site encourages kids to discover music using multiple senses and interactive tools. The site isn’t extensive, but it provides the basics and also suggests some activities that can be done at home to learn more. Key classical music concepts are explained simply using an announcer, music, and interesting animation and interactive opportunities help

Educational value: The site does a good job of providing kids with some basic information about the different kinds of music that can be heard on the radio station and different composers.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
  • How much music there is to explore in the world. How many different musical genres can you name? What are your favorites and why? If you could create your own online radio station, what types of music would you have on your playlist?

  • Why arts education is an important part of one’s education in school. What other types of art-related activities are you taught in school? How does the Internet open up a new world of arts education?

  • How can kids use computers to explore the arts outside of school? What type of things can you create using the computer?

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

Aside from what’s taught in school, kids often get their music education from the latest videos on YouTube or the latest tween who’s singing on the Disney Channel. At KUSC’s website for kids, a more thorough exploration of the musical arts is provided, and it’s done in a manner kids will both understand and enjoy. The site makes good use of the medium and uses entertaining and interactive ways to introduce some pretty complicated musical concepts. Artful animation and playful music bring opera, chamber music, and symphony to a child’s level and engages them. An interactive Hansel & Gretel opera invites users to help with the production, all while watching the story (sung in English) unfold. As a wardrobe designer, they can change characters’ stage clothing or as a lighting technician, they can control spotlights. Visitors can also explore interactive games that teach about chamber and symphonic music or take a guided tour of a radio station and on-air studio. Who knows? A little time spent here may inspire a kid to add a bit of Debussy to that Disney.
