Parents need to know that since this site is from the British Broadcasting Company, a few British expressions may confuse kids at first. Tell them not to be gobsmacked, because they'll catch on quickly, Bob's your uncle. There's no advertising on the site.
Ancient math all-stars Pythagoras and Hypatia are your clueful hosts to this entertaining and educational game show where you can win virtual prizes. Twelve games await you on the wheel of math fortune. Click on either of your hosts to spin -- or just select the game you want to try. Each game offers a different challenge. There are also printables to help reinforce what you've learned.
The prizes on the site maybe aren't so fabulous -- we won some replica Elizabethan dentures -- but the games are mad fun anyway. One favorite is "Builder Ted." He wants to fix a hole in the roof, but needs your help in arranging his bricks. Each has a decimal on it; can you put them in order? His responses throughout are funny, and the surprise at the end is perfect.
Families can talk about how we apply mathematical principles to everyday situations. For example: Can you calculate the average number of points you scored in basketball games over the course of a season? If you get 14 out of 20 questions correct on a test, what percentage grade will you get? How does probability factor into games played with cards or dice?
