What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this appealing virtual world is a new premium feature of Miss O & Friends, one of the better social networking and activity sites for tween girls. Miss O & Friends Virtual World is as safe, fun, and wholesome as the Miss O site with the added excitement of walking, talking avatars modeled after the site's hip preteen cartoon characters Justine, Isabella, Harlie, and Juliette.

Educational value: Girls get to explore different looks and identities via avatars they can dress and rooms they can decorate.  There are pop quiz and trivia challenge games, but kids have to leave the virtual world in order to play them on the main Miss O & Friends site.
Positive messages: The site promotes friendship and good, clean fun, in the form of virtual parties and shopping.
Violence: Not applicable.
Sex: Not applicable.
Language: Not applicable.
Consumerism: Girls play games to earn virtual money for clothes, furniture, and pets. There are no ads -- but in order to play many of the games users have to exit out to the main Miss O & Friends site, which does have flashing banners. All the products advertised are kid-friendly but some of the pop-ups are hard to make go away.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Not applicable.
Privacy & safety: Privacy is good overall though not bulletproof. Parents can set chat to a pre-scripted mode, which limits conversations to safe canned words and phrases, and kids can make their accounts private. According to the site, all messages sent in freestyle mode are filtered for inappropriate language and personal info for safety. However, our test of the filter didn't catch everything that violates this policy. Parents keep a comfortable level of control. Preteens need parental permission to join Miss O Club Plus+, which features the virtual world, and parents can choose whether kids will use a freestyle or prescreened chat mode.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

Cute pig-tailed avatars and hip music make this new virtual world an irresistible destination for girls who like to virtual shop and decorate. It features five new original games and adds new ones regularly. Some bugs were still being worked out shortly after the July 2009 launch. For instance, an entire page won't fit on the screen so users have to scroll. Another major pain: most of the games require exiting to the main Miss O site to play, then retracing multiple log-in steps to return to the same spot in the virtual world. (Points earned on the main site carry over to the virtual world and the site owners say that eventually passing back and forth will be more seamless). A grammar and spell check to fix the run-on sentences and misuse of words like "it's" and "its" would be nice, too. But the gorgeous graphics and new offerings like Gloss Toss, a girly version of Space Invaders, help make up for these flaws. The addition of the virtual world just gives parents of tween girls one more good reason to ante up a monthly fee to use premium features on the Miss O site.

Online interaction: Online interactions are friendly and positive. The site helps ensure this with a pre-scripted chat mode and profanity filter. If offensive language does slip through,  users can notify moderators with a few clicks of the mouse. The site rewards friendly overtures by keeping a running tally of hugs received from other players.
