  • Common Sense says

Safe, planet-themed virtual world fun for space junkies.

Why We Rated This on for Ages 9 and Up

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

Players can earn points by taking multiple-choice, space-themed quizzes, though some of the tests offer little explanation to help kids learn the material; they simply present the questions ("What is a light year?" for example) and inform the player whether they selected the correct answer.
  • Messages:

Members can chat with each other; the site screens for inappropriate content.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

Some games features lasers and small explosions, generally from blowing up meteors, asteroids, etc.
  • Sex:

    Not an issue.
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

The site is affiliated with Tiny Planets, a popular British animated TV series, though the online content has little to do with the show. Players are strongly encouraged to purchase a monthly membership, and many of the site's features are available only to paid members. Users earn "star" points by playing games, taking quizzes and participating in other activities, and can spend the points on various objects that they can use on the site, though some items are only for sale to members.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About My Tiny Planets

Parents need to know that this space-themed Web site lets users design their own planet. They earn "star" points by playing games and participating in other activities on the site, and then spend the points to purchase spaceships and a wide variety of buildings, landscapes, atmospheres and other features to customize their planets. The games and some other activities are open to all, but only members can adopt a planet; memberships cost 3.95 per month. The site is affiliated with Tiny Planets, a popular British cartoon series, but little of the content refers to the TV show.

Well, I'm not a space junky.

When I first signed up, this site was kinda confusing. And now it's time for Pros and Cons. Pros: Good for space junkies, lots of places to visit, cool looking space ships, and a good variety of Space Suits. Cons: You can get lost easily, a little too fast-paced Mini-Games, and I suggest you install Shockwave and Flash before playing, otherwise your computer will crash. Overall, 3/5. (Because I'm not a space junky.)

Really pretty and a lot of fun

So I enjoyed this site; it's tried really hard to be original, and has this neat space theme. To be honest the graphics are just awesome, but you do need quite a high spec PC to cope with them. Loads of features and games, you've got to have Flash AND Shockwave because there are some 3d games (I played Cosmic Cleanup - a lot!). There's a lot on here too, loads to explore. Good quizzes too. Some were quite hard...! Gets my thumbs up.
