Parents need to know that this is one of the juiciest and most non-kid-friendly places for celebrity gossip. Perez hones in on Hollywood's most notorious celebs, so there are many references to drinking, drug use, sex, and physical appearance. Posts are irreverent, very tongue-in-cheek, and often cruel, and language in both the posts and the comments isn't safe for kids (many appearances of "f--k" and "s--t"). Comments can also turn into a free-for-all of ethnic, religious, and racial slurs (most recently, a post about Madonna's visit to Israel sparked an outburst of anti-Semitism). Uncensored versions of celebrity photos show breasts and underwearless crotches. The site has a healthy amount of advertising, including some for alcohol, dating sites, and sex toys.
Pink-haired PerezHilton.com founder Mario Lavandeira calls himself the "Internet's most devilish gossip columnist." He's famous for his trademark white pen, used to embellish photos on his site with things like drug residue under nostrils, and unflattering appendages. He's also developed a reputation for "outing" celebrities on his site, and being unapologetically fickle. Perez recently set a traffic record with 8.82 million page views in 24 hours, and his TV show What Perez Sez (definitely safer for kids than the Web site) on VH1 was already popular after week one.
Celebrity gossip is a guilty pleasure, but Perez isn't covering it in a way that's appropriate for kids.
Families can talk about why celebrity gossip is so appealing. PerezHilton.com covers many celebrity lawsuits. Why do so many celebrities seem to be constantly at odds with the law? Also, for someone who earns a living making fun of celebrities, Perez Hilton seems to go out of his way to be photographed with them. Is he trying very hard to be a celebrity himself? How has the blogosphere changed the way we view celebrities and the news in general?
