Why We Rated This on for Ages 10 and Up

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

The site is multilayered and involves interacting with other users and solving puzzles and problems.
  • Messages:

Part of the message of the Web site centers around the fight of good versus evil. Users need to save the online community from the clutches of dark forces. Throughout the web site, you'll find messages letting users know it's cool to be nice and members can earn points by doing good deeds. On the flip side, girls might get a mixed message as female avatars are of all one body type, around a size 2. Perhaps doing good involves looking thin and attractive too.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

    Not an issue.
  • Language:

Chatting is moderated by live moderators and bad language is not allowed.
  • Consumerism:

The site is operated by the tween retailer Justice as a marketing tool to promote the clothing chain. However, there are no prominent ads for the clothing store. The site itself features many opportunities for members to "buy" virtual items, from clothing to room accessories. To get the "Scape Bucks" to purchase these online goods, users need to either earn points by completing tasks or simply get a parent to pay via credit card.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About Scapenation

Parents need to now this is a commercial site run by the tween clothing chain Justice. Although the site currently doesn't feature any advertising, it is designed to market the retailer and is heavily promoted in Justice advertising. Also important to note, the site encourages users to ask their parents to load their accounts with real cash to buy virtual items. Although there is the ability for users to chat with other members, parents can create their own monitoring account and control these features.

Can you think of any products that use an interactive social Web site to promote their brands?
