Parents need to know that this educational site includes a wide variety of topics and activities that kids will be into -- and probably have to know for a school report or test. Some things could definitely upset a kid (a timeline for the Holocaust has some pretty gruesome photos) but the site does a great job at warning you if there's anything to worry about. There are many ads on the pages, and book reviews contain an Amazon link to buy the book.
Created and maintained by an education professional and expert in social studies, SOCIALSTUDIESFORKIDS.COM offers original articles and games on geography, maps, economics, the alphabet, and more to challenge your brain cells. Some offer tutorials, and there's a handy glossary, too, arranged by historical event. You'll also find information about current events such as Black History Month and the Olympics. Some topics are missing overview articles, relying instead on a carefully chosen selection of links to other resources around the Web. Don't miss the book review section, where you'll find lively commentary on all kinds of titles for kids.
This is a terrific site where kids can learn and play games at the same time.
Families can talk about finding reliable information on the Web. Why is a site created by an educational professional better to go to than a site you just come across during a search? How can you tell if you can trust what you're reading on a site?
