Why We Rated This on for Ages 15 and Up

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

If your teen is interested in fashion, this is a great place to find inspiration and information about how the industry works, to learn names and faces of the top players and to learn about specific jobs within the trade.
  • Messages:

Created "for the fashion industry leaders of tomorrow," this site encourages teens and college students who are interested in fashion to really dig into the industry in productive, meaningful ways. The positive attitude vibe carries into the "7Qs" profiles the site conducts of industry success stories, as well as the blog posts and other features.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

Some parents may find some of the haute couture fashions featured here to be a bit too sexy for 13-year-old girls (the young end of the age range for which this site is created) but otherwise it doesn't focus on stick-thin models or the other body image pitfalls that sometimes plague the fashion world.
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

Some average American teens may find it difficult to distinguish their real-life financial inability to live the high-fashion life from all of the hype and glam photos on this site filled with tales of high-end designers and photos of what's-hot-must-have-styles of the season. There are lots of fashion-related sites advertised here, as well as links to outside not-for-profit organizations, blogs and fashion Web sites. A lot of everything fashion -- jewelry, shoes, clothes, CDs -- is promoted here.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about how fashion can be fun, but also very pricey. How can your teen make her desire to buy the latest styles fit it into your family's budget? Where can creativity and budgeting befriend each other when it comes to fashion? Also, discuss what it takes to get into and be successful in a highly competitive field like fashion.
