What parents need to know

Parents need to know that SUDDENLY DARLING is a girls' fashion and beauty site that encourages modesty and creativity. Started by a Christian teen girl named Katelyn Rose, the site carries some big-name store advertisers and a rack full of teen or early-20s celebrities who promote modesty, too.

Educational value: Solid, basic fashion, hair, skin care and makeup tips (including video tutorials) for teens and tweens help girls learn how to take care of themselves without feeling like they have to spend a lot of money in salons or spas to look and feel good.
Positive messages: Dress modestly and with style without breaking your bank account is the message here. Also, "If we want guys to respect us, then we need to respect ourselves."
Violence: Not applicable.
Sex: If you're looking for an entirely "modest" website in the strictest sense of the word, this site may not pass the test. Some of the teen models' strike-a-pose attitudes and some of the swimsuit photos may be considered by some to be too suggestive or at least not entirely modest. But generally speaking, nothing overtly sexual here by any means.
Language: Not applicable.
Consumerism: Lots of ads and product placements for fashion sites and stores, a contest sprinkled here and there. Still, there's lots to read, watch and do that doesn't require buying anything.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Not applicable.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

SUDDENLY DARLING is a colorful, hip beauty and style site intended for girls who love fashion but want to learn how to look good while dressing on the tame side of the fashion equation. Through photos, articles, discussion boards, interviews with celebrities and product ads and descriptions, tween and teen girls can learn that fashion and modesty don't need to clash. There's a subtle Christian bent to the message, but overall any girl who is into fashion and is looking for support to dress her age could find a lot of helpful information and fun here.

Online interaction: Message boards appear to stay close to topic and tone of site. Girls can and do include photos of themselves next to their posts.

This is one of my favorite websites! You kinda learn whats cute and really "In" but modest! You can get points for answering ?'s and loging on to it! When you get about 30 points you can get a gift card they send it to you and you kinda get it free!!!! This is really cool cheak it out!!!!

Perfect for tweens and teens.
This website is helping girls understand that you can be modest, pretty and cool. The only thing I did not like is the lack of African-american models.

Safe site for girls interested in fashion
This is an awesome website for girls who are interested in fashion, and dressing modestly. Though targeted toword teens, middle schoolers can enjoy other girls style sense. Other important issues come up, such as fitness, skin care, eating well etc. Pros: positive self image, user content, great style ideas. Cons: it's really all about buying clothes. Every outfit page features the separate clothing items used in the outfit, showing the store from which it was bought and the price. Most of the outfits cost well over $100. The site design itself is a-okay. The comments are clean and free of profanity. But overall, the message that being modest is #1 outweighs the rest.

What Would Jesus Wear?
Sorry, I couldn't resist. But, in all seriousness, "Suddenly Darling" is probably the most wholesome, squeaky-clean "fashion and style" website around. While the site has lots of "omg! that hair is, like, so totally cute!"-type content, it always encourages young girls to be modest and never objectify themselves. The "Christian" stuff is pretty forced and unnecessary, however. The site would have been more appealing if it didn't try to incorporate religion into fashion. Still, the messages on this site apply to anyone, regardless of religion. The site teaches self-esteem, modesty, and self-respect - which, yet again, transcend religion and apply to everyone equally. As with any fashion site, numerous products and brands are promoted. But, since it would be literally impossible to make a fashion site WITHOUT the promotion of certain brands and products, this is acceptable. The site offers fashion advice for girls of all different colors, heights, sizes, and hair types. It never makes anyone feel "inferior" because of their physical appearance. Yes, it's superficial, but it's never nasty. Overall, it's a sweet, fun, wholesome site that young girls can enjoy and parents can feel completely comfortable with.
