Why We Rated This on for Ages 17 and Up

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

A politically aware teen could learn a lot here about how global community works on a person-by-person scale, while a non-politically aware teen might change their world view.
  • Messages:

This site provides a simple way for youth to get involved in whatever social cause interests them. It encourages interaction, reasoned debate, and mutual respect.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

There is nothing explicit or implicit on the site, though the potential exists for sex-related topics on the forums. Abortion, for instance, could be discussed.
  • Language:

The site does not use strong language, and forum participants are discouraged from using profanity. Still, the occasional four-letter word can slip through.
  • Consumerism:

There are no ads and no products, only partners that provide some content. These show up in a box called Partner Spotlight or in a "sponsored by" line with the content.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

The site takes an active anti-tobacco stance with its Tobacco Card Game.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about the issues explored on the site -- anything from world health to human rights to education and peace. How does it make you feel that some mothers in poor or oppressed countries don't have access to prenatal care? The opinions expressed in the forums provide useful perspective, because they are often from people who live in the places being discussed. How does it make you feel when people disagree with the United States' position on an issue?
