Why We Rated This on for Ages 5 and Up

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

Users can learn about various animal habitats, as well as interesting facts about a variety of animals, such as the Mexican giant tortoise and the Amani forest tree frog. Each page offers up fun facts, like "orangutans teach their young how to use tools."
  • Messages:

The overall message is repeated several times on the Web site and on the toys themselves:  if we don’t help the environment, it won’t be there for us “tomorrow.”  The “Donation Tales” department outlines the focus and mission of different wildlife conservation organizations worldwide. However, there aren’t many instructions given to kids about how they can do their part to help save wildlife and the ecosystems of the world.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

    Not an issue.
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

Tales 4 Tomorrow plush toys are being sold at theme parks and other tourist attractions throughout the country. Like Webkinz, to gain access to the Web site, users need to buy one of the Tales 4 Tomorrow toys, which provides access to the site. Once online, users play games to earn “Habitokens,” the currency of the site, which can then be used to purchase items for the animal’s virtual ecosystem. The more virtual items, like wildlife and plants, the happier your animal becomes.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About Tales 4 Tomorrow

Parents need to know that Tales 4 Tomorrow is a lot like Webkinz, one of the first toy/Web site combos. The brand purports to be "green," but it's hard to ignore the fact that the business model includes the manufacturing and sales of toys. Overall safety seems to be good. There is no chatting on the site, but members can send preselected messages to other users, as long as they know each other's user names and have confirmed each other as friends.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about what “green” means. What are some ways that you can help the environment around you? Do you think buying a stuffed animal is a good way to help the environment? Tales 4 Tomorrow promises to donate 5% of its net profits to wildlife charities. Does that make you want to buy this product more?
