Why We Rated This on for Ages 8 and Up

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

Great resource to help kids learn about social, political, and environmental issues, and much more.
  • User-created content:

    Not an issue.
  • Messages:

The site teaches kids to be aware of what's going on in the world -- whether it's politics, social issues, problems stemming from global warming, or just interesting facts about other countries' cultures, geography, and wildlife. It may inspire them to take an active part in making the world a better place.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

News articles give some basic facts about violent incidents (such as political assassinations, for example) but don't include any disturbing details or photos.
  • Sex:

    Not an issue.
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

There are a lot of ads encouraging kids to subscribe to the TIME for Kids magazine, a couple of ads for sweepstakes and contests, and ads for other Time-Warner properties.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

How safe is it?

  • Personal privacy:

    Not an issue.
  • Online interaction:

You can send a letter to the editor which might be published on the site.
  • Parental controls:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About TIMEforKids

Parents need to know that this site, which supplements the TIME for Kids magazine, is a safe and wonderfully eye-opening place for kids to hang out online. Although there are versions of the TIME for Kids magazine for grade-schoolers, the site is more for tweens and up since articles give frank facts (while leaving out disturbing details) about things like political assassinations and social injustices.

    KOOOOOOOL!**

This is a good magazine. I am glad that the popular "TIME" magazine has made a series for minors. It keeps many people updated on politics, weather, and great book/ magazine reviews. You will be glued to it. Time For Kids is also subscribed to many elementary/ intermediate schools. This will lead to many discussions around students. Time for kids also has many writing/ journalism contests. This gives kids great practice and opportunities to look forward to in the future. Overall, I give this magazine 5 stars. I would like everyone to read at least one issue.
