Not age appropriate for kids under 8, age appropriate for kids over 11; suggested age 10.
  • Is it any good?

    3.0
  • Common Sense says

Social site for tweens mostly safe, but some iffy content.

Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 10–11

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

Kids can learn about building and managing Web sites by creating their own Zone. The Buzz has some content about technology and current events but a lot of fluffy celebrity-based stories (like the launch of Jessica Simpson's new perfume).

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Users and comments are friendly and constructive. Most of the avatars and icons are fine, but a few are rude -- for example, a photo of an obese woman in a bikini is filed under "humor."

  • Violence:

The Cinema has some violent classic cartoons -- for example, a dog attacks Woody Woodpecker with a meat cleaver. There are some shoot-'em-up and fighting games with weapons and explosions, but no blood and guts.
  • Sex:

    Not an issue.
  • Language:

Safe chat only. There's no profanity, and users can't disclose personal information. "Crap" and "hell" appear in some news stories, but not as insults.
  • Consumerism:

There are no dedicated ad spaces, but plenty of product mentions and brand names -- from AOL to Paris Hilton -- in news, reviews, and downloads. The Buzz links to outside Web sites.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About Tweegee

Parents need to know that this site is designed to introduce tweens to social networking and other Web 2.0 technologies in a safe environment. To that end, text fields in chat, messaging, and profiles are filtered, so users can't disclose any personal information, curse, or make sexual comments. Users can upload and share photos and videos only if parents fax in their written permission. The Buzz has lots of links (with bumper messages) to outside Web sites where users can download software and applications.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about how tweens can use the Web to express themselves safely. How did you decide what to put in your profile and your Zone? What kinds of photos and videos are safe to upload, and what's off limits? Families can also talk about how it's important to check with a parent before downloading or installing any programs.
