  • Is it any good?

    4.0
  • Common Sense says

YouTube, minus the iffy stuff. Great family fun.

Why We Rated This on for Ages 4 and Up

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

Some videos have an educational twist (numbers, alphabet, nursery rhymes, look both ways before you cross the street, etc.), but the site's primary goal is to entertain.
  • Messages:

"Be nice" is the TotLOL philosophy, and it seems to be working

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

A little physical comedy in videos from shows like The Muppet Show, Tom & Jerry, etc.
  • Sex:

    Not an issue.
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

Many of the videos are snippets from longer movies and TV shows; kids who watch the short videos may be interested in getting the longer ones.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About Totlol

Parents need to know that this site -- which collects YouTube videos deemed appropriate for kids by the self-moderating site community -- is specifically targeted to kids under 13. It's easy for parents to search, browse, set up playlists for their kids, submit videos, and/or rate videos. Creating an account is free and requires only an email address, username, and password. A parent-lock feature allows moms and dads to block any marked videos and turn off participation features. No store, advertising, or outside links were found on this site.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about why a site like this is necessary. How does the content on this site differ from "regular" YouTube? Explain to your kids why you don't want them just going straight to YouTube. Also talk about what kids should do if they come across any videos on this site that make them uncomfortable or that they just don't like. Parents: Do you want them to show you, or would you prefer they move on to the next thing? Check to see if kids know what the control buttons do on this site (and others): play/pause buttons, the right-top close button "X," screen and volume adjustment buttons, etc.

    My concerns are:
    • User content isn't age appropriate

TOTLOL sent my kid inappropriate email

I let my kids have access to TOTLOL until the site sent my kids inappropriate, suggestive email. Then I asked Ron, the guy that runs TOTLOL to shut down my kids account, AND HE WOULD NOT DO IT! It has the worst parental controls ever, you can't turn it off. Just look around the site, there is no possible way to shut down an account. I'm pretty sure there is a law that specifies how you are supposed to handle children's data online and I'm pretty sure Ron's policy violates it.
