Common Sense Note
Parents need to know that this Web portal for girls has a ton of information to help tweens and teens safely pursue their passions without the interactive aspect of many sites today. There are links to Amazon in several sections that mention books and movies. And, although the founders say they try to confirm every link is to a safe, legitimate site, they do link to many external sites which, in return, link to other sites.
Families can talk about the importance of self-empowerment, motivating yourself to try new things, make smart decisions and take care of yourself. What are some things you can do to boost your self-esteem? What makes a girl "strong"? What's one thing that you want to try?
Common Sense Review

GIRLSCANDO.COM -- an online guidebook for hobbies, programs, careers, and other interests -- has a motivating message: Encourage girls by informing them. The seven major sections on topics such as sports and your body have subsections (plus has links to purchase music, information on magazines, and programs), so it's not hard to find yourself confused about where you are in the site, let alone which subject you want to experience more of in the real world. Still, some content is good, such as the excellent interview with the founder of Teach for America. Others -- like the review of a 10-year-old Sarah McLachlan album, listed as her latest -- are not. Overall, GirlsCanDo.com is text-heavy and variety-light. Multimedia is nonexistent. Articles are lengthy and have few photos; long lists of books consume most sections. Its heart is in the right place, but GirlsCanDo.com is capable of doing much more.
