Youth Radio
Is It Any Good?
Part of a nonprofit that gives kids hands-on training in all aspects of new media and journalism, YOUTHRADIO is a great resource for kids interested in media careers. Featuring articles and videos written and created by young journalists-in-training based in the U.S. and around the world, the site also links out to hot-topic articles on popular news sites. Articles and videos by staffers and students are engaging and fresh, such as dispatches from a young protestor caught up in Iran's post-election violence and a 15 year-old's account of his dad being taken away by immigration authorities. While this type of coverage makes the site worthwhile it should be noted that the Culture section includes some coverage of celebrity scandals, but not as much as other teen-focused news Web sites. There is also streaming music from urban and eclectic up-and-comers -- there's no mention of age-appropriateness, but given the organization behind the website it seems safe to assume that the lyrics are clean.
