Virtual world lacks real learning and fun.

Why We Rated This on for Ages 8 and Up

The good stuff

  • Educational value:

Some videos and games about animals on this site may be considered mildly educational, but overall, the site's claim that it's about "making the world a better place" and teaching kids about environmental issues is seriously inflated.
  • Messages:

While the site claims to teach kids "compassion for endangered animals, plants, and lands," there's currently very little substance to support that claim.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

    Not an issue.
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

The site is ad-free, but there's a $5.95 monthly fee (or $57.95 a year) for a premium membership, which gives users more avatar choices and access to other site features. (Note: There are no refunds for cancelled memberships.) The premium membership is hyped many times, and kids can get a free trial by referring friends.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About ZooKazoo

Parents need to know that while this site bills itself as a place for kids ages 6 to 12 to "hang out, have fun, and even make their world a better place," "hanging out" is really the main activity. Kids select an avatar (representing themselves as an animal or something such as a cell phone, blender, or even a roll of toilet paper), and then use an easy-to-navigate map to explore virtual areas where they can play games and chat (and more, if parents pay for a premium membership). A few of the Zoo Tube movies in the theater are as close to educational as anything you'll find here, and they're less than a minute long. Many kids on the younger side of the age group are probably going to find this site too laborious, and many 12-year-olds will likely think it's too simplistic.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about what kids really want from this site: Knowledge? Or contact with other kids? Do kids have to be learning something all the time? When is fun just for fun, and when is fun a time waster? Is it fun for your child to scoot around from room to room in a virtual world, waiting for strangers to say something? Why or why not?
