James P. Steyer, CEO of Common Sense, released the following statement:

"Students and educators have powerful voices and are showing courageous leadership in their communities by taking action on the fight against gun violence in schools. Common Sense supports the well-being of kids and families, and we fully support the students and educators participating in recent and upcoming events to end gun violence. Students and educators are on the front lines every day and know better than anyone that we can and must make our schools and communities safer.

"Common Sense is urging legislators to listen to what students and educators are saying and take quick, decisive action. One place to start is putting an end to the debate over whether public health research should investigate the causes and impact of gun violence in this country. The more we know and understand this issue, the smarter policies we can put in place. Today, the federal government is blocking research, so we are calling on policymakers at the state level to step up and demand it. We must better  understand the problem and develop smarter policies moving forward."
