Ann Pao Chen

Ann Chen is an independent consultant focused on advising non-profits. She was a partner at Bain & Company, and retired in 2013 after 22 years with the firm. Most of that time was spent in Hong Kong, where she lived for 19 years. Ann is now based in the Bay Area and continues to provide consulting to a select group of organizations which are making an impact in education.

While at Bain, Ann led the consumer products and retail practice in China and Hong Kong and worked with leading multi-nationals to further their growth strategies across Asia. She also established a practice to provide pro-bono consulting services to high potential non-profits in the education, arts and community services sectors. She led the strategic planning process for Teach for China, enlisting and training college graduates to teach in the rural villages of China. She also worked in partnership for many years with Mother’s Choice, the leading organization for families and girls facing crisis pregnancies, helping to increase the number of children served and change Hong Kong adoption policies.

Since moving to the Bay Area three years ago, Ann has continued to advise high impact organizations in education. She serves as a long-time advisor to De Marillac Academy, a school for the underserved children, youth and families of the Tenderloin, and has supported Making Waves Academy, a charter middle and high school in Richmond as well as Teach For China.

In addition, Ann is a Director on the board of The Corporation of Yaddo, one of the country’s most established artists’ residency programs, serving on the Finance Committee. She is a Trustee at the Town School for Boys, a K-8 independent school in San Francisco. Ann also serves on the HBS Alumni Board.

Ann has a B.S.E. in computer science from Princeton University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. She is married to a business school classmate and has a teen-age son. Her family spends time at sporting events, both watching and playing, and travelling to new places.
