Do beer commercials during sports broadcasts affect my kid?
Beer marketers joke that you can't sell beer without sports. Consider the Super Bowl, whose top sponsor for years has been Anheuser-Busch, and whose 2014 and 2015 "Lost Dog" commercial perfectly illustrates why beer commercials have a big impact on kids.
Alcohol ads featuring music, animals, funny characters, humor, and cool-looking lifestyles naturally pique kids' interest. When they like these ads, they're more likely to have positive views about alcohol use and drinking.
Sports broadcasts also offer marketers lots of chances to expose their brands: The games can last for hours (increasing the number of ads kids see), and the arena itself may contain beer signs, logos, and shots of fans drinking.
Does that mean your kids shouldn't watch sports? Not at all. There's a lot you can do to run interference on beer ads.
Limit commercials. Hit the mute button or use your DVR to start the game late so you can fast-forward through ads.
Count 'em up. Ask your kids to keep a tally of all the beer promotions, from signs to sponsorships. (Anheuser-Busch is the official sponsor of Major League Baseball.)
Decode the messages. Ask your kids why they think beer manufacturers advertise during sports games.
Have a debate. Does alcohol advertising during college sports broadcasts send a mixed message to possibly underage students?
