Family movie night? There's an app for that

A Lot or a Little?
What you will—and won't—find in this app.
Ease of Play
Painting the figures and playing with the app is very intuitive, but a zoom feature would help when trying to paint very small sections, and the persistent advertising makes navigating through the app more difficult. Also, when you attempt to delete one of the saved scenes, the game asks if you want to leave the application instead of asking if you want to delete the scene. This mistakenly worded screen may accidentally cause kids to delete scenes they did not want deleted.
Products & Purchases
Each time kids finish coloring and arranging a scene, screens advertising the publisher's other apps automatically appear. This also happens when kids tap the house to go back to the main screen. If the advertising screens are tapped, kids are taken to the iTunes App Store.
Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that 3D Coloring Book for Kids: Fantasy Girls is a three-dimensional coloring app where kids can choose from 10 fantasy figures to color: nine girls and one boy. The figures can be rotated on the coloring screen to gain access to all surfaces, which can be painted with the 12 included colors. Once finished, kids can pose the figure, place it in front of the background, and add additional decorations. The final completed scene can be saved inside the app. The app seems unfinished with some confusing spots and many lost opportunities to add functionality. There is also another version available for the iPhone/iPod touch.
Is It Any Good?
3D COLORING BOOK FOR KIDS: FANTASTY GIRLS is an unusual variation on the coloring app genre, and its three-dimensional aspect can make kids feel like they are completing something more tangible than a flat coloring page. There are few color options, however, and no backgrounds to choose from; each figure has one set background. Some of the few decorations available to use with the backgrounds don't fit well with the fantasy theme. Deleting saved scenes is confusing, and the heavy advertising gets in the way of gameplay.
Did we miss something on diversity?
Research shows a connection between kids' healthy self-esteem and positive portrayals in media. That's why we've added a new "Diverse Representations" section to our reviews that will be rolling out on an ongoing basis. You can help us help kids by suggesting a diversity update.
