What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids can learn to think about words in a different way with 7 Little Words. Similar to crosswords, kids have to figure out a clue and are given the length of the word. But instead of getting specific letter position hints as you gradually do in crosswords, kids get groups of letters to mix and match. It tests kids' vocabulary to think of words that solve the clue, and also spelling, as kids rearrange the letter groups to form target words. It also gets kids thinking about prefixes and suffixes while they try out different combinations. 7 Little Words offers puzzle-loving kids a fun way to expand their vocabulary and practice spelling.

Ease of play

Learning to play this game is simple, but playing is still challenging, even with no time limit, scoring, or penalty for wrong answers. The levels do not progress in difficulty, but rather have challenges sprinkled throughout them, so you can try to solve the easy clues first and narrow down the choices for the harder ones. There are no hints, but you do not have to finish one puzzle to start the next one, and your progress on each puzzle is saved, so you can skip around among puzzles if you get stuck.

Violence

A few clues or words are somewhat related to violence, such as "military headquarters."

The free app includes 30 puzzles. There are three additional zones with 50 puzzles each available; each is a $.99 in-app purchase. More zones are gradually being added. Drinking, drugs, & smoking

A few words or clues are related to alcohol, generally wine.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that 7 Little Words has 30 word puzzles that test trivia knowledge and spelling, with many more puzzles available as in-app purchases. Each puzzle has clues for seven words. The clues are similar to crossword puzzles, for example, "used up" is the clue for "spent." The seven words that answer the clues are broken into tiles of two or three letters ("spe" and "nt") and scrambled around the board. Players must tap the tiles in the correct order to submit one of the seven words. There is no time limit and you can skip among different puzzles. Three more sets of 50 puzzles each are available for in-app purchase, with more on the way. There are also links to more games advertised in the app.

What's it about?

7 Little Words presents kids with seven clues such as “becoming less rural” and a bunch of letter groups. In this example, kids would have to figure out that the answer is "urbanizing" from all the choices, and find the letter groups “urba,” “niz,” and “ing.” It can be tough to try to figure out the answers as you cannot move the letter groups around. There is a shuffle option to remix the order, but kids still have to do some mental rearranging. There are no hints, rewards, or high scores, but completing a puzzle is satisfaction enough.

QUALITY

For kids and adults who love crossword puzzles, word scrambles, and word finds, this is an excellent and engaging twist on typical word games. The lack of a time limit lets you really get engrossed, and the process of elimination with the clues can teach you new terms. The simple, no-frills setup means the puzzles aren't very replayable, so you'll probably end up wanting to buy the extras.

Families can talk about...

  • Play along and help kids figure out the clues and come up with possible vocabulary words.

  • Do related activities with your kids such as crossword puzzles.

  • Practice spelling some of the words seen in the puzzles outside of game.
