What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids can learn the art of stop-motion animation and digital creation with Animate It! If kids want to use this animation tool to create a short movie with a narrative, it can also provide them with practice in storytelling. Kids can also learn the math concepts of sequencing and part-whole relationships in a concrete, creative way. There's no sound on this app, which can be perceived as a minus or as a way to encourage kids to focus on visual storytelling or imagery. Animate It! is a fun way for kids to learn about how images come together in a sequence to make an animated film.

Ease of play

The basic function of this app is surprisingly easy to use; many elementary school-age kids will be able to create and watch their own simple stop-motion animation (think Wallace and Gromit) using this app without too much confusion or frustration. The in-app help page is easy to read and full of useful info. Using more of the features, however, may require help from the online manual or a parent for younger kids. Teens should be able to create as much as they want with few to no problems.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Animate It! allows kids to create stop-motion animation videos with photos they take with a mobile device's camera. It's sort of like the high-tech version of the flip-book cartoons kids draw on notepads, but with photos and many more options for adding extra creativity to the mix through editing. The basic function of this app -- taking sequential photos and putting them into motion -- is surprisingly easy to use. Younger kids may not fully grasp the concept of how to take sequential photos in ways that make the best use of this app, but it can be fun for them to try anyway. For kids who are into animation and have mastered the basics, this app can empower them to take their creativity wherever they can imagine.

What's it about?

Kids simply start taking photos -- of themselves, clay characters, friends, their pets, a flower -- that they'd like to see animated in sequential order. Ready to see them move? Just press play. To add more creativity and complexity to the mix, kids can change the rate of speed that the frames change; copy, paste, or reverse sequences; delete or reorder frames; and more. Different projects can be titled and saved, or exported to the mobile device's camera roll.

Is it any good?

Animate It! was created by the studio that birthed Wallace and Gromit, and this app may help kids and teens create even more original work like that, too. The accessibility of this app for a wide range of abilities helps even young kids be able to try out the concept of taking photos of a series of sequential events and seeing them put into motion. While it would be a nice addition to include sound on this app, something as simple as photos of a friend waving or your own smile turning into a frown and back to a smile again can be a wonder to a child who's given the ability to bring it to life on-screen via Animate It!.

  • Be the subject for one of your kid's films! Let your kid "direct" your move for each photo to be included in the sequence.
