What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Aprender Inglés y Español is an educational learning app designed to teach users to speak, write, and think in a new language. It was developed through a partnership between Univision and Rosetta Stone as a way to support the Hispanic community in gaining English-language proficiency. Those looking to gain proficiency in Spanish can also benefit from its use as this app also offers a Spanish option. Though it may seem mostly geared toward adult use, kids can greatly benefit from language learning with this app. Make sure to customize the settings, as kids will appreciate a much friendlier child's voice and an option to learn letters, characters, and sounds. The first couple of lessons in unit one are free. After that, the complete program comes with a steep price tag of $199. However, several subscription options are available starting at just $54 for a three-month subscription. A 12-month subscription will cost you $119 and includes two sessions with a live online tutor. Read the app's privacy policy to find about the types of information collected and shared.

What's it about?

APRENDER INGLÉS Y ESPAÑOL provides an immersive curriculum developed by education experts at Rosetta Stone. Language learners gain conversational skills across dozens of topics. Included are 20 units in topics such as Language Basics, Work and School, Dining and Vacation, Everyday Things, and more advanced topics like Business and Industry, and Arts and Academics, just to name a few. Also included is TruAccent speech recognition technology that allows users to record their own voice as they practice speaking skills and improve speaking accuracy. Under the Extended Learning option, you'll find a Phrasebook, Stories, and a handy Audio Companion. Practice by tapping on images that match the spoken words or text, and press and hold to expand an image for a better view and more practice. Record your voice as you practice accuracy and learn new words and phrases. In all, language learners can take advantage of 40 to 50 hours' worth of language immersion when accessing the complete program: 20 units and 720 lessons.

Is it any good?

Parents learning a new language or teaching it to their kids will find this full immersion program engaging and easy to use. Core lessons in language basics -- pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar -- prepare kids for more challenging exercises. Users listen to illustrated words or phrases repeated. What's nice is that illustrations are included for all words and phrases, making them easier to understand and learn. Select to have words and phrases visible as they are spoken aloud or choose to have them hidden to focus just on listening and speaking. Extended Learning is available through a Phrasebook that includes words and phrases for everything from time and money to dining out and other everyday topics to help you get around, ask directions, and more. The included Audio Companion feature allows you to access downloaded audio lessons anywhere regardless of cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity. All in all, Aprender Inglés y Español is a comprehensive -- though pricey -- program for learning English or Spanish that parents and kids can both use with some adjustment of the settings.
