Art Set

Deluxe creative tool will wow artists young and old.

What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids can learn to hone their art skills using Art Set's high-quality virtual paper, paints, crayons, pens, pencils, pastels, and markers, as well as texturing and blending tools. For example, kids learn how different textures are created with oil pastels vs. marker pens. By using the tool that lets kids paint over photos stored on the iPad, kids learn how technology expands possibilities for art creation. This high-quality app provides kids with an entire mobile art set they can experiment with anywhere, anytime, mess-free.

Ease of play

Extraordinarily easy to use, even with the vast number of drawing and painting choices that are available on this app. The quick guide is a great way to get an overview of the tools, but it's not necessary to read it to begin.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Art Set allows kids and adults to create tremendously beautiful art with high quality virtual "paper," paints, crayons, pens, pencils, pastels, markers, and a host of texturing and blending tools as well as the ability to paint over photos stored on the iPad. With all of these choices, it may sound like a complicated app, but it's not. With a bit of direction, even very young kids can figure out how to find and choose what color, medium, and tool they're looking to use to draw and paint anything their mind can create. This app can provide hours of entertainment for budding artists, without piles of paper, broken crayons or emptied paint tubes. And for more advanced artists, such as high school art students, this app may open entirely new options with which to explore their talents. All for $.99. A similar iPhone version is also available.

What's it about?

First kids choose from a variety of papers on which to start their work of art with the app Art Set. Next, they select a color and type of medium with which to draw or paint. As they sketch, paint, erase, zoom, blend, and splatter to their creative outer limits, kids learn about texture, brush stroke, color variations, and more. Kids can also draw over photos stored on the iPad, and store their creations as well.

Is it any good?

There are a lot of fabulous drawing and painting apps for the iPad, and ART SET can rightfully take its place among the best, especially considering the $.99 price. The clarity and natural appearance of the drawings (and even the paper before any drawing has been done) is almost surreal. Practically speaking, the "recent tool list" helps users organize the tools they are currently using more than others to "grab" and use them again more easily. One flaw may be that it doesn't have quite as many color choices as some of the other art apps; not a big deal for kids just playing around on it but potentially very bothersome for more advanced artists and art students. Another difference here from other art apps is that Art Set doesn't have the ability to email or post to social networking sites directly out of the app, which could be a plus or a minus depending upon who is using this app.

Families can talk about...

  • If your kid is struggling with the options on this app, read through the tutorial with them to teach them simple tricks and tips.

  • Take your kid to an art store for a free art class, or just walk around and talk to them about what the differences are between working with virtual vs. real colors and tools.
