Did we miss something on diversity?

Research shows a connection between kids' healthy self-esteem and positive portrayals in media. That's why we've added a new "Diverse Representations" section to our reviews that will be rolling out on an ongoing basis. You can help us help kids by suggesting a diversity update.

A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Educational Value

Kids can learn how to manage their time and prioritize tasks. Once a kid experiences the positive feelings and results that accomplishing tasks and staying on top of their time brings, they'll likely see the app as a support system rather than a task master.

Ease of Play

Generally easy to use. Adding a daily repeat function -- so that users could select a task reminder once to repeat daily on weekdays, for example, or all seven days -- would be useful.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Bear in Mind App: To Do list, reminder, tasks is a kid-friendly app for making task lists, setting alarms, and creating a quick phone contacts list. Parents or kids can make to-do lists and set timed reminders from a premade list of 42 icons -- including icons for taking medication, doing homework, and remembering a lunchbox -- or make a personalized reminder icon with a photo. There are 35 unique, kid-friendly alarm sounds to choose from and nine languages. Parents may need to help kids discern how to best use the app and set up the first few reminders. Once a kid completes all their daily tasks, a positive message with a cute panda appears. Read the app's privacy policy to find out about the types of information colllected and shared.

What's it about?

To use BEAR IN MIND APP: TO DO LIST, REMINDER, TASKS, tap the "+" icon on a day, and then toggle next to tasks to add them to the day. Drag tasks up or down the list to order according to preference or priority. To set alarm reminder, tap the task and choose from 35 choices. Choose "Repeat weekly," if desired. If you don't acknowledge the alarm, a push notification appears asking if you've remembered the task or appointment/event related to that alarm. Tap to check off a day's task when completed.

Is it any good?

For parents looking for a way to give their kids positive reminders, this app can be a very useful alternative to old-fashioned nagging. For kids who need to remember to take a medication at a specific time each day or who need to get themselves organized and off to school by themselves, Bear in Mind App: To Do list, reminder, tasks may be an excellent self-directed support for both self-care and time management. Still, this reminder and alarm app has room for improvement. Adding a daily repeat function -- so that users could select a task reminder once to repeat daily on weekdays, for example, or all seven days -- could streamline this process for tasks kids need to repeat every school day or every day.

Parents may want to start by setting reminders first before handing over control to their kid and keep an eye on how they use the app at first to make sure it's effective. Even though the developer says it's for children and teens, many teens will probably find the look of the app too baby-ish for them and the functionality too isolated for their hyperconnected, social media-oriented lives. But for younger kids who are just learning to become self-organized, stay on task, and be on time, this is a terrific start.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about why it's important to complete daily tasks and how setting reminders and following through using Bear in Mind App: To Do list, reminder, tasks can benefit kids in many ways. From daily flossing to daily multiplication tables, consistency is key.

  • Talk about how to make reminders effective. What time in the morning should you set the alarm to remind you to brush your teeth? Five minutes before you leave for school or 15 minutes? How about the homework reminder? Two hours or 15 minutes before bedtime?

  • Review your child's contact list with them to develop an "easy call" list that's really helpful. Who does your child know they can reach in an emergency? Who do they need to call often? Build the list together.
