A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Educational Value

Kids can learn all about snakes and the geographic areas in which they live with Britannica Kids: Snakes. The app provides details on almost 20 popular snakes through nature videos, photos, articles, games, and quizzes. Kids can also learn potentially life-saving information about identifying venomous snakes. It would have been helpful if this app warned kids that some videos show snakes eating small animals. Britannica Kids: Snakes helps kids identify types of snakes and understand snake behavior.

Ease of Play

As long as kids who use this app can read, it's easy to learn the features quickly and play on with ease. A simple shake of your mobile device is all it takes to scramble the puzzles; other games use the standard swipe of a finger or a tap to maneuver.

Violence & Scariness

There's some pretty graphic nature footage of snakes strangling and eating little animals. Some discussion about deadly poisonous snakes may be upsetting to younger kids.

Sexy Stuff

Unlike most other education apps, this app's store section is sandwiched right in between the games and other features on an option wheel.

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

What parents need to know

Kids will need to have a good command of reading to really utilize all of the information here, so it will be just right for kids around ages 8 to 12. Some videos that show snakes eating small animals may be a little much for younger kids. Also, there are options to connect with Twitter and Facebook from the app and location tracking for a maps feature.

What's it about?

With Britannica Kids: Snakes, kids choose a topic from an options wheel, such as snakes and humans, life cycle, food, and more. Then they can read the related articles, watch videos, look on an interactive map, or play games, such as a memory match game. A simple shake of your mobile device scrambles the puzzles; other games use the standard swipe of a finger or a tap to maneuver. Quizzes are timed.

Is it any good?

Kids who loves snakes will happily sink their teeth into BRITANNICA KIDS: SNAKES as they learn more facts, play games, watch videos, and test their knowledge about these fascinating and often feared creatures. It's unfortunate that the online store for more apps like this from Britannica Kids is so intertwined with the other features on this app. Parents may want to remind their kids to get permission before clicking "buy" in this or any app.
