Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Cash Cow is an appealing puzzle game that's based entire around the mathematics of money. In order to clear coins from the board, you need to connect smaller denominations and merge them into larger denominations. For example, connecting five nickels makes a quarter -- but so does connecting a dime, two nickels, and five pennies. The strategy is all in the numbers. Our review is based on the iPhone app; the Android app may have some differences in functionality.

What's it about?

In Cash Cow, kids clear coins from a 6x6 game board by connecting adjacent coins that add up to larger denominations. The goal is to clear a certain amount of money from the board before time runs out. For example, when kids connect two dimes and a nickel, the coins disappear, they earn $.25 toward the goal amount, and new coins drop from above to fill in the empty spaces. After successfully completing a level, kids can use their "earnings" to buy decorations for the barnyard.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

If someone told you CASH COW was a game about counting coins to learn math, you probably wouldn't be very excited. So don't think about the math -- just play it. You'll quickly see how fun and appealing it is. And it's a fabulous way to mix arithmetic with playtime for kids. In between rounds, players also get to use the "money" they've collected to buy new items for a farm scene that they can decorate and customize as they wish.

Families can talk about...

  • Practice addition and subtraction with your child using real coins. Young kids, especially, benefit from the use of real objects when learning math skills.

  • Help your kids figure out the different combinations of coins they can connect in Cash Cow; for example, what are all the combinations that add up to 25 cents?

Our #1 Favorite iPod Touch App

Reinforces and builds upon the money concepts she learned in Kindergarten and has given her a leg up over the summer for 1st grade. Kids should play the practice or relaxed modes until they get good and then move to the timed Endless and Arcade modes. Fun for parents too! I love it as a little brain break! It also doesn't require internet connection so it's great for iPod Touch users like us.

Highly addictive for kids and adults alike!

Fun app! My kindergartener is still working on money-related concepts. This is a fun way to manipulate money and learn in the process. It has multiple levels, and you can play timed or untimed. I find myself loving the speed rounds.
