Chronicles of Mystery

Common Sense Media says

Hidden object game with strong heroine and deep plot.

What parents need to know

Ease of play

The game runs very smoothly. Controls are simple and easy to figure out. Puzzles later in the game get more challenging than those early on, but none are ever punishingly difficult.

This story of action and intrigue has some moments of minor violence (a man is pushed from a ledge, a knight in a flashback gets caught in a rock slide). In one scene, the heroine is knocked out (the actual attack is not seen on screen). These events are seen in still-frame story scenes.

One big scene involves a lit cigar. No one is smoking it at the time, though. It is used to set off a smoke alarm.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Chronicles of Mystery is a hidden object puzzle game with a deep plot about archeologists searching for an artifact from the days of the Crusades. The intelligent heroine tries to track down her missing mentor and is harassed by his rivals during her search. She gets into some dangerous positions during her Da Vinci Code-like journey, but is never really harmed. There are many other kinds of puzzles (most of them story-based) that must be tackled along with the standard hidden object puzzles.

Is it any good?

CHRONICLES OF MYSTERY takes the hidden-object genre into new territory by weaving a deep and compelling plot -- in which the search for hidden objects actually makes sense -- and adding tons of variety with multiple other kinds of puzzle mini-games that pop up along the way, all of which are tied into the action of the story. The game feels less like a scavenger hunt for random items and more like a genuine interactive mystery. Fans of the hidden object genre should love this intriguing and atmospheric adventure.
