Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Clifford's BE BIG with Words is a cute and creative spelling app that features characters from the Clifford TV series on PBS Kids. In the game, Clifford's human friend, Jetta, is painting. Kids spell out words to tell her what to paint. After choosing the first letter, they are given a choice of second letters, and then a choice of third letters -- so whatever choices they make, they will end up spelling a real word. There is also an iPad version available for $3.99; the only real difference is the quality of the graphics and screen size.
What's it about?
In CLIFFORD'S BE BIG WITH WORDS, kids can give Jetta ideas for her paintings by spelling words. Kids spell 3-letter words by choosing letters one at a time. Their choice in each round helps to narrow down the letters in the next round. For example, if kids choose "d" in the first round, they might only see "i", "o" or another vowel in the second round. By the end, kids have spelled "day" or maybe "dog." And voila, Jetta has painted exactly what kids chose!
Is it any good?
With Clifford's BE BIG with Words, kids don't need to worry about spelling mistakes. Really, they don't even need to know how to spell. Whatever letters they choose, they will spell a word, and they will get to see Jetta paint a picture of it. The way it's set up, the app allows kids the freedom to experiment and to guess, just to see what happens. And in the process, they learn how some short, common words are spelled.
