Colorforms Revolution

Several modes give lots of options for fun digital art.

What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids can learn about shapes, sizes, colors, and how each shape makes the picture, identifying part-whole relationships in their art. Colorforms Revolution can help kids practice critical-thinking skills as they complete puzzles by matching shape and shape size to each missing part. The Go Wild mode may be a bit too wild for some kids. Colorforms Revolution offers mind-stimulating, colorful choices for creative play with shapes.

Ease of play

Very easy to play. Younger kids will likely want to play the "easy" mode on the puzzle boards, but even in "hard" mode, kids can tap on a question mark and the next move will be played for them by the app.

The Colorforms brand and logo are front and center, and if kids tap on the "i" tab on the main page, one of the options given on the page they're directed to is "More," which moves kids out of the app and onto the Colorforms official website, where other Colorforms products are advertised and available for purchase.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Colorforms Revolution is like having a Colorforms set on your mobile device -- except the pieces are much easier to keep track of than the small vinyl Colorform pieces. Kids manipulate the onscreen pieces by choosing shapes and colors, then swiping, rotating, and pinching or enlarging pieces to change their size and create a picture. There is a free version of this app with fewer options. Parents should note that the app connects to Game Center, and creations can be shared via Facebook.

What's it about?

Tap on one of four modes: Create, Play Sets, Puzzle Boards, and Go Wild. Tap Create and a blank board appears, along with shapes, stickers, and a color wheel. Then kids choose the shapes, stickers, and colors they want to use and swipe, rotate, and pinch or enlarge pieces to change size and create a picture. Choose Play Set mode and tap one of eight themed play sets to decorate. Puzzle Boards are like puzzles in which kids fit the pieces. And Go Wild is an animated, visual extravaganza of shapes bouncing around as kids tap them.

Is it any good?

COLORFORMS REVOLUTION is a lot of fun for kids who like to play around with shapes, colors, and stickers placed in different configurations to create pictures and designs. The four different modes offer kids the choice of complete creative control, or they can use pre-designed play sets for some structure as starters for their creative play.

The app also offers puzzle boards that are more of a mental challenge or the "Go Wild" mode, for some chaotic free play. There may be some frustrating moments for kids who can't quite size a piece exactly right -- the pinching and expanding take some fine motor skill -- or a sense of being overwhelmed in kids who get overstimulated by the "Go Wild" mode. The help tab offers visual and written instructions. Once kids find the right modes for their creative preferences and become comfortable manipulating the pieces, Colorforms Revolution can be fun digital art.

Families can talk about...

  • When your child makes a Colorforms picture that he or she is especially pleased with, share it with others.

  • If your kid becomes frustrated with the puzzles, make sure the setting is on "Easy" or that they know they can use the "?" button for the app to complete the next piece of the puzzle.
