A Lot or a Little?
What you will—and won't—find in this app.
Kids can learn counting with numbers 1 to 10 and learn some vocabulary for food items. They'll also practice good listening skills and following directions to complete the tasks. Kids will get lots of repetition and exposure to counting in this educational app as they count foods that the caterpillar wants to eat, and for counting skills practice makes perfect! Still -- even with several games -- the app isn't likely to hold most kids' attention for long. Though kids can learn and practice counting with Counting with the Very Hungry Butterfly, it's not strong in engagement or depth.
Ease of Play
The interface is preschooler-friendly, and kids just tap their answers. They do have to choose "done" to move on to the next screen, but the button begins flashing to remind kids if they don't tap it quickly.
Products & Purchases
A button on the main screen with a cute caterpillar takes kids to a list of more apps to purchase, which links directly to the app stores.
Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Counting with the Very Hungry Caterpillar is an educational app based on the Eric Carle book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and it's designed to teach kids counting. You'll find artwork from the popular book in the app, as well as background music by Mozart, but you won't find the original story.
Is It Any Good?
Young preschoolers may be excited by the familiar illustrations from the book, and they can easily navigate through the levels counting foods and following instructions. Kids must hit the "done" button after each screen to advance to the next, which may cause little ones some frustration. You can boost the level of challenge a bit by choosing a random order of numbers rather than sequential order in the options, but there is not much to engage preschoolers for long -- even with the five levels.
Did we miss something on diversity?
Research shows a connection between kids' healthy self-esteem and positive portrayals in media. That's why we've added a new "Diverse Representations" section to our reviews that will be rolling out on an ongoing basis. You can help us help kids by suggesting a diversity update.
