A Lot or a Little?
What you will—and won't—find in this app.
Ease of Play
Cupcakes! Holiday Edition walks you through each step, with plenty of written explanations. Younger children who can't read may need some help. The pop-up instructions can get annoying if you've already played before and don't need assistance.
Products & Purchases
There are several links within the app to other games by the developer, the Jelly Belly website, and other news and info from the developer.
Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Cupcakes! Holiday Edition lets their kids create, decorate, and "eat" holiday-themed cupcakes. The variety of ingredients allows for a lot of creative play, but access to email, Facebook and Game Center present a few privacy and safety issues. Also, Maverick Software tends to advertise their other products and partner products quite heavily within the apps.
Is It Any Good?
CUPCAKES! HOLIDAY EDITION is a holiday-themed version of Maverick Software's Cupcakes! app. Players prepare cupcakes by putting liners in the pan, choosing a type of batter, setting a timer for the oven, and then adding decorations. The variety of decorations is almost overwhelming: frosting, toppings, filling, Jelly Belly brand jelly beans, and candy letters. You can even choose the type of paper cup to use, and put candles on it before serving, then tap on the picture to "eat" the cupcake bite by bite.
The decorations can be filtered by holiday: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Year's. Cupcakes can be stored in the fridge to save them, emailed to friends, or submitted to the Hall of Fame, which has themed contests to enter. It's a pretty cute game that kids will enjoy, although it would be nice for parents if you could turn off some of the ads and options to send information outside of the app.
Did we miss something on diversity?
Research shows a connection between kids' healthy self-esteem and positive portrayals in media. That's why we've added a new "Diverse Representations" section to our reviews that will be rolling out on an ongoing basis. You can help us help kids by suggesting a diversity update.
