Educational Value

Kids can learn to improve their reading skills, and parents can learn strategies to help kids become strong readers. The shared reading experience, with parents guiding kids to predict what may happen, retell what has happened, and evaluate what happened, develops reading comprehension. This isn't a phonics exercise, though kids will develop that level of reading literacy by reading along as they listen. Kids can demonstrate what they remember from the story and add their creative touches in the theater, where they can create their own virtual puppet show. Curious George and the Firefighters by i Read With is an impressive, effective reading tool for parents and kids to enjoy together.

Ease of Play

Kids can read along as the story is read aloud, tapping the colored words to activate animations. Kids must tap the arrow to advance pages. A video tour walks parents through the dialogic reading method used in the interactive book.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Curious George and the Firefighters by i Read With is an interactive book that uses the dialogic reading method that gets kids actively involved in reading a story, making comments and predictions and answering questions. Kids can listen to the story read aloud, read and talk about it with a parent, or retell it with a virtual puppet show. Parents can customize the reading level for question difficulty and record kids saying "living words" within the story. The story itself includes the typical antics of the curious monkey and doesn't model good decision-making.

What's it about?

In CURIOUS GEORGE AND THE FIREFIGHTERS BY I READ WITH, George goes on a field trip with a class and ends up riding along to a fire. The text is read aloud, and each page features a couple of interactive elements and a "living word" that comes to life to demonstrate its meaning. Kids can record their own voices reading the living words. The Read & Talk section is for parents and kids to enjoy the story together, giving parents questions to ask kids to deepen reading-comprehension skills. Kids then can retell the story in the theater.

Is it any good?

Curious George and the Firefighters by i Read With is a complete reading lesson for kids, including reading along, predicting, learning vocabulary, and checking for understanding. Parents don't need an education degree to sit with kids and help them develop reading skills -- i Read With puts it right on the device. The story is engaging with George and firefighters, two classic preschooler favorites. The theater may be the most exciting feature, giving kids the chance to create their own retelling of the story by moving the characters around and recording their own voices.
